Quote of the Month for April 2015

8261688904_1fab40105d“Of course homeopathy works. The only thing to be determined is HOW it works. Even if the authors of this article think that it only works by placebo, what they then mean is that the homeopathic consultation and the belief of the homeopathic doctor is the source of healing, rather than the medication. And if that is the case, then conventional medicine has much to learn from homeopathy. And if it’s the medicine, then doctors have even more to learn from homeopathy. Thus the worst thing to do is to trash homeopathy in any way.”

Brian Kaplan, MD.

(This was one of several rapid responses sent to the British Medical Journal by Western doctors and others in response to the review by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council which stated the Council’s belief that homeopathy was not an effective treatment for any health condition.)

I have a huge problem with homeopathy – because its claimed efficacy is purely anecdotal and it is used for conditions which tend to resolve by themselves. I used to be a great user and supporter, even attempting to vaccinate myself and one of my children homeopathically. But over the years I have become more and more sceptical as I have seen it fall down in various uses – e.g. arnica for bruising, rescue remedy or sleep remedies, fear remedies, bleeding in birth, induction of labour etc. I would love it to work – but it just doesn’t. Any placebo effect is fine, but it is not consistent. If any clients of mine wish to use it, I generally tell them that I really don’t know much about its application, and leave it up to them to use in their way. The woman gets to choose what she thinks will help her in birthing her baby – I definitely believe in the power of the mind to influence birthing!
