I like to spend time trying to make the world a better place. Within my tiny segment of the universe, I do that by offering information and education to midwives and birth folk in the hope that together we can make things better for women, babies and families during the childbearing year, and I do that because I believe that strong, well-informed, empowered and happy families are at the heart of a better world.
One of the questions that I am asked a lot is how midwives and birth folk can help bring about positive change, especially when they are busy and don’t have much time.
This is an important question, and one of my favourite answers to it is also one of the simplest.
Wear the tee-shirt.
Or drink from the mug, carry the bag, jangle the keyring and put a skin on the iPad, because using, carrying or wearing anything which has a positive message on it about birth or midwifery will ensure that this message is seen by hundreds of people as you go about your business, and with no extra effort on your part.
It’s an easy form of advertising a product, service or message, and we know that it works, because commercial companies spend thousands of pounds, dollars and rupees on products with their brand or logo on.
Now I don’t have hundreds of thousands of spare rupees to send everyone a mug or t-shirt, but what I do have is an artistic husband who is also passionate about families, babies and birth. Chris has created a design to help spread a positive message about midwifery, and we are delighted to be unveiling it today, hopefully in time for anyone who is looking for ideas about what to buy a fellow midwife, birth worker or supporter of midwifery for the holidays!
It’s a really simple idea. Chris has teamed up with a cool company called zippi, who are a small, friendly and customer-focused business rather than a big faceless corporation, and we love the friendly and personalised service that they provide. (When you get your first ‘we’ve received your order’ email, you’ll find out why!) Chris’ design is now available on mugs, bags, t-shirts, phone and iPad cases, laptop skins, keyrings, mouse mats and more. My favourite is the messenger bag, which fits all my teaching kit in, and those of you who have admired it at my workshops can now, if you like, get one of your own. It’s the perfect size for paperwork or your antenatal visit kit!
We’ve never been into commercialism, and we’re not going to start now. Any profits that we make from the sale of these goodies are going to be ploughed straight back into my heart-funded birth information project. So you can treat yourself, change the world AND help support free birth-related information all at the same time 😀 Click here to find out more. And even if you’re not in need of more birth-related goodies, please share this post so that we can spread the word to others 😀
