Word-thought for the day: replacing risk with chance

I only have one thought to share today, but, as it is one of my most favourite things to say, I’ve made it into a picture.

I realised this one day a few years ago while talking to midwives about statistics and the language that we use when we talk to women about decision-making.  I am concerned that, whether by accident or design, the language that is used tends to over-emphasise the potential downside in ways that range from unhelpful to downright disempowering. But almost any time we use the word risk in relation to childbirth, we could choose to use the word chance instead.  The meaning stays the same but it is no longer cloaked in fear.

Please feel free to try or share 😀
